Airwave, one of Belgium’s iconic underground dance music gurus celebrates 20 years and, to mark the occasion we have something really special lined up. From the moment this musical genius stepped into the Bonzai offices with those first, early recordings, we just knew he was going places with that unique, perfectionist sound he created. Two decades on, he is still creating supremely unique soundscapes that continue to captivate. For Airwave it’s all about the music, he puts his heart and soul into every production and is rewarded with dedication and loyalty from his massive fanbase. We at Bonzai couldn’t be prouder of his achievements and we know he will carry on in true Airwave style for hopefully, another 20 years.
To mark Airwave’s 20 years in the dance music business we’ve conjured up an irresistible multi format release of a choice selection of top cuts with both the collector and the working DJ in mind.
A 2x CD release will feature 17 of the best original length Airwave moments professionally re-mastered for maximum sonic pleasure. Classics such as Above The Sky, Innerspace, Ladyblue, Alone In The Dark, When Things Go Wrong and Venus Of My Dreams as well as more recent hits like Tigris And Euphrates, Cathedrals Of Hope, Chiricahua and Sadness In Black And White – Part 1, several of which will be appearing for the first time on CD outside of the many albums Airwave delivered over the years. To top this one off we have an exclusive remix of Save Me from Magdelayna, a real treat for progressive trance fans.
System D’s seminal hard trance classic gets a digital re-release on Bonzai Classics. Originally released in 1994, this EP featured 4 solid cuts including Deviant Behaviour, Hardtrance and Shipment In Trance as well as a monster arena style effort from our very own Marnix B aka Marnik Braeckevelt with his Trance Remix of Trancefusion. Pumping, pounding kicks, scratchy synths and heavy basses were just the perfect combination to get the crowds going wild. Each track carried its own weight with ease and to make this one exclusive, we’ve included all tracks from the 1994 12” vinyl as well as the original version of Trancefusion.
The epic Atlas Winds and Chiricahua were taken from Airwave’s superb studio album Dark Lines and packaged into a double A-side release in 2012. Atlas Winds is one of those sublime trance moments that stick with you. Each time you listen you find new, intricate patterns and new sounds which make it the perfect fodder for peak time madness. Chiricahua is the epitome of Airwave’s love for breaks. Soaring synths, Ethnic flutters and 303 action wrapped up in mesmerizing grooves put this one in the firm favourite category of many.
Airwave’s 2012 cut Cathedrals of Hope gets a fresh release on our Bonzai Classic imprint. Originally out on L*C*D* Recordings, these three tracks continued a string of quality productions for Belgian maestro Laurent Veronnez. Purely trance infused grooves with uplifting and energetic qualities from the title track, backed up with the equally superb Reset and the Album Version of the epic Atlas Winds.
The Bonzai Classics remixes just keep on coming. This time we’ve enlisted the very talented and popular remix trio of Rick Simmonds, Stephen Jones and Liam Melly aka The Space Brothers. The guys get to grips with The Green Martian – Industry and churn out a fitting tribute to a club stomper. The man behind The Green Martian – Laurent Veronnez – gave us this cut back in 2000 on our Tranceportation imprint and the track instantly became a firm favourite with its minimalistic approach and that sizzling, intense build up. It was quickly snapped up by Serious Records and went on to feature in many compilations. Durango 95 provided a memorable remix back in the day that would still stand out in today’s scene. Prior to this Laurent was knocking out track after track and hit after hit as Airwave and many other guises, but The Green Martian project always delivered having already had 8 tracks that rocked clubland. Several other release would follow in the next few years before Laurent put more focus into his main projects. We are delighted with this newest remix, and just so you know, The Green Martian hasn’t gone away.
The Space Brothers was started by Rick and Stephen before Liam joined the group in 2014. Throughout the mid to late nineties the group became synonymous with pumping remixes as well as several anthemic trance cuts including Shine, Forgiven and Heaven Will Come. Their own tracks were given the remix treatment by the likes of Lange, Olmec Heads and Matt Darey and their debut album featured a special mix of all tracks from Paul Oakenfold. They also had mega hits under different aliases including Ascension (Someone), Chakra (Home, I Am), Force Majeure, Klymax, Lustral (Everytime), Oxygen, Sapphire, Simmonds & Jones and The Realm which marked them as legends on the scene. In 2014 Irish producer Liam Melly joined up and their first release as a trio – Forever – was very well received. One year later they put their name to this remix we have today and we’re proud to be able to officially release it on our Bonzai Classics imprint. The remix gets going in true club style with a nice punchy kick drum and rhythmic percussion backdrop before a snare roll takes us to the bass drop which delivers a charging rolling bassline and that infectious gated synth. The track builds and builds before breaking to reveal brighter, wide open synths backed with cool acid lines that weave in and out of the sound. The main break goes into almost complete silence which is broken by a soft rising pad that creates a dreamy atmosphere. But the pleasantries don’t linger too long as we begin an intense climactic build up that ends with a huge wall of noise before the beats take over once more. An epic cut that will still raise the roof at any venue.
To keep the 25 years celebrations we’ve commissioned another series of remixes of some of our memorable classic cuts. In 1996 we launched the Bonzai Classics label and delivered the top tunes of the day on vinyl, CD and later on digital platforms. The success of the label was outstanding and this was due to the forward thinking, in-depth knowledge of the electronic music scene from within the Bonzai family. Over the last number of years we’ve been busy filling up the Bonzai Classics digital catalogue, it’s now possible to download hundreds of your favourite Bonzai retro gems via Beatport. Keep your eyes peeled for more in the run up to 18th November 2017 at Waagnatie where our year long party comes to a climax.
To kick start this new series we’ve enlisted the supreme talents of Blufeld, a very much revered Bonzai artist for almost a decade, who will be utilising his remixing skills on Airwave’s When Things Go Wrong. With an ever evolving sound, Blufeld is the perfect match up for this one as the original contains beautiful melodic parts for him to play around with. There can be no doubt that Airwave is a hugely influential figure in the progressive and trance scenes. For over 20 years he has consistently provided us with anthemic tracks filled with raw emotion and drive. Released in 2003 this explosive melodic trancer rose to prominence in a very short space of time. Such a simplistic structure that seems to unleash a wave of emotion with every listen. If there was ever a defining moment in emotional, melodic trance, then the original is right up there. On the remix Blufeld has done the track justice, bringing the sound in to the modern era in a deeper progressive style. The intro comes at us with mesmerizing synth which is followed by a solid chugging bass and tight beat construction that stays the course for the duration. The beauty of this track lies in the raw proggy groove that draws you in as the layers build. Blufeld creates a tension the builds effortlessly and climaxing with that infectious melody we know and love. A simply stunning contemporary take on a classic that will give the floors a good time.
